My work revolves around immersing myself in the landscape and translating that experience onto canvas through oil paint. I start by sketching on location, using watercolours, pencils and pens to capture the immediate shapes and colours of the environment, whether land or sea. These sketches influence my larger works, allowing me to distill the essence of nature without rigid structure.

Nature plays a vital role in my practice, offering organic forms and a freedom that contrasts with structured precision. This fluidity invites expressive marks and gestures, suggesting rather than defining the surroundings. For me, the process is about embracing the unpredictable flow of the natural world.

Sketching has become a grounding part of my process, a way to loosen my hand and release any pressure for perfection. Working quickly with shifting light and movement, I’m reminded to trust my instincts and respond to the scene in real-time. This practice enriches my approach, blending observation with spontaneity.

I aim for my paintings to mirror the ease and immediacy of sketching, capturing my surroundings with fluid marks and gestures. Through oil paint, I seek to translate the landscape and seascape with a sense of drawing directly on the canvas.
